About Us

Urban Light Community Church is a multi-racial, inner-city church in Muncie, Indiana that is passionately committed to Christian community development. Urban Light was founded by and for community residents to be the Body of Christ in its own community reconciling people to God and to each other (John 1:14, 2nd Corinthians 5:16 - 21).
 
Although we collectively gather on Sundays at Muncie Boys and Girls Club for worship and a community meal, the main thrust of Urban Light’s work is interpersonally raising up indigenous leaders and developing the inner city community where we live. That’s why the Urban Light family 1.) Educates youth through Urban Light Academic Coaching, 2.) Provides addiction recovery and prisoner re-entry housing 3.) Throws free, neighborhood block parties with people of all races, shapes and sizes, 4.) Plants community gardens where neighborhood residents can work together and have access to free produce 5.) Runs small businesses that employ people no matter their background, 6) Advocates on political issues that affect to our community, and through it all 7.) Shares the Gospel of the free grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to seeking the welfare of our city (Jer. 29:4-7). Even though Urban Light dwells on the south side of town in often overlooked neighborhoods, we believe our community is worth caring about. We want it to be the best place it can be. We want it to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family. We want it to be like the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven (Matt. 6:10).
 
More than anything else, we believe in reconciliation; that God was in the world in Jesus Christ reconciling people to Himself (2 Cor. 5:16-21). And, it is through this love that He has reconciled us to each other, making one Body of people who would otherwise be enemies (Eph. 2:13-16). We believe that the best and most real picture of Jesus Christ is a diverse group of people authentically living together in love (John 13:35).
 
We believe the Gospel is about more than just the spiritual. God cares about the physical too like if people have enough to eat and if their heat is turned on. God cares that people receive a good education and all that they need to fulfill their potential in Him. This is what the Bible means when it says that Jesus Christ is reconciling all things to Himself (Col. 1:20). The Lord is not just about getting our souls into heaven when we die: He is about full abundant life here and now (John 10:10).
 
Urban Light is a group of imperfect, sinful people, standing on equal footing before the cross of Jesus Christ, moving forward with one unified mission: to reconcile people to God and to each other as we live out God’s Kingdom in Muncie, Indiana.
